Book Discussion: Pocket Full of Dreams
Author David Burch presents his life story of self transformation from abuse, poverty and tragedy in "Pocket Full of Dreams." A mayonnaise sandwich, split three ways. Some days, that's all David Burch and his siblings would be given to eat. Their childhood was one of severe poverty, violence, abuse, and unbearable tragedy. At one point, he just wanted to give up. The pain never seemed to stop coming. "It seemed every time I got myself back up and brushed off, I would get kicked in the teeth and knocked back down again. I did not buy the whole 'God will not give you more than you can handle' crap. 'Just leave us alone, God,' I thought. 'I am tired … really, really tired.'" "In Pocket Full of Dreams," David shares his heartbreaking but, ultimately, triumphant story. Readers will be profoundly affected by his courage and resolve —- and inspired to overcome challenges they may be facing in their own lives. Over the years, Burch had been encouraged by others to share his story. On Feb. 22, 2011, the day before his 50th birthday, he began to write.“Like Forrest Gump, I just started running and did not stop,” Burch says. The author hopes that others —- especially young adults who struggle with confidence or feelings of inadequacy —- will read it and be inspired to take charge and make changes in their lives. “I hope people will understand that attitude is huge,” Burch says. “Life is 10 percent what happens to you—and 90 percent how you react.”
